PRESS RELEASE
Local Charities Benefit from Festival Cash
Three charities have been chosen to benefit from the 2009
Kenilworth Festival.
The Town Mayor, Councillor Richard Davies, and Festival
Co-Chairs, Roy Shearing and Mike Lewis, handed over cheques to the three
Kenilworth charities at a celebratory dinner sponsored by The Holiday Inn and
Sainsbury’s.
A cheque
for £500 each was presented to Newlands Care Home, Kenilworth Community Care
(Waverley Day Centre) and local charity, the Inclusive Leisure Education
Activities Project (ILEAP).
Newlands will be putting their money into a fund to
pay for a new mini bus. The
Waverley Day Centre will be using its donation to pay for a social event for
elderly people in the town and ILEAP will provide activities for disabled young
people at Kenilworth Youth and Community Centre.
The 2009 Festival ran from 11-17th May and
included an Art Exhibition, literary speakers, a barn dance, Sedan Chair Race,
live music and a Party in the Park – a free family fun day held in the Abbey
Fields. Whilst many of the events
were free and sponsored by local businesses, funds were raised via ticketed
events, donations and raffles.
Kenilworth Festival Co-Chair, Roy Shearing said: “The
Kenilworth Festival does not seek to make a profit, merely recover its costs
and make enough money to sustain the future of the Festival. Where possible, it is our intention to
make local charitable donations each year.”
Plans are already underway for the 2010 Festival which will run from 10th to 16th
May. The event
is promoted by The Rotary Club of Kenilworth, with help from volunteers
who meet on a monthly basis. To
