Rotarian Derek Topham (28/2/1929 - 28/7/2005)

With the death of Derek Topham, Kenilworth has lost a man who epitomised all that is considered best in life and who, in his service to others, fully reflected the aims and objectives of Rotary. A bank official by profession for over 42 years, he served in various capacities including a period as manager of the Kenilworth branch of Lloyds Bank, in the town he returned to on his retirement after a period of ten years at Stourbridge. His service to Rotary covered thirty years from his induction in Kenilworth in 1975 and, not unnaturally, for most of the time he was treasurer of each of his Rotary Clubs, as well as carrying out similar duties for other charities including Multiple Sclerosis research. He would occasionally draw attention to the fact that he had spent more time serving on Rotary Club Councils that he had off them.

Although he had been plagued throughout his life with several serious and sometimes life threatening illnesses, he was forever cheerful, short on complaining, and ready to offer help whenever he could. He was president of Kenilworth Rotary Club in 1981-2 when his wife Cynthia was President of Inner Wheel; he was a school governor, steam train driver, a worker for the talking newspaper for the blind, and an avid cricket fan. Forced to resort to a motorised buggy in his later years, he announced this to his Rotarian friends, and with that quizzical smile he so often wore, added the words “I hope I bump into you now and again!”
He will be greatly missed.
