Thalessemia care in Jamshedphur organised by the Anurag Foundation

Jamshedphur is a city in eastern India,  west-northwest of Calcutta. It has a population of 604,000. Thalessemia is a hereditary blood disease in which there is abnormality of the globin portion of haemoglobin, in layman’s terms – a scarcity of red blood vessels. The Anurag Foundation has been established to offer full and free treatment to deserving patients at Ardeshir Memorial Hospital, Jamshedphur. Patients requiring blood transfusions, Serum-Ferritin tests, consultation with Pediatrician and counseling.
So how do these three combine together and concern the Rotary Club of Kenilworth?
In 2005 our International committee was approached by Manoj Tiwari of Rotary Club of Jamshedphur to help fund one year’s treatment  for 10 children suffering from Thalessemia. Early in 2006, $2727 in local currency was on its way to India.
Seventy-five children from the city have access to this treament and so the Foundation has equipped a waiting room with toys, games, books, cassette player and television for their amusement and relaxation.  These areas are fun places where children come once a month for blood transfusions.
Blood transfusion in many cases results in the body having a high iron content. To remove this an expensive drug, Kelfer is prescribed. The Anurag organization due to lack of funds had to regretfully send back several patients without Kelfer. To treat one patient with Kelfer for one month costs approximately twenty pounds. The donation from charity funds collected by Kenilworth Rotary contributes towards this cost.
