The Centenary Walk: 100 miles for 100 years

Five Rotarians began their walk to celebrate 100 years of Rotary on Thursday evening, June 9th, 2005: Iain Cockburn, Clara Cockburn, Steve McConnell of the Rotary Club of Southam 2000, Dave Pettifer from the Rotary Club of Kenilworth, and Niklas Brännström from the most northerly Rotary Club in Europe, Luleå Nyckel in Sweden.

Friday morning, after walking all night, a welcome stop for breakfast.

Then on the way again.

The Control Centre team having lunch on Friday and awaiting the team to arrive at Southam Congregational Church where the headquarters was set up.

Feet already needed much attention.

Then the five walkers set off again.

This time along the towpath with Steve McConnell striding out front.

The walkers make their way through Abbey Fields, reduced from the original five to four after Rotarian Steve McConnell retired with exhaustion after 57 miles.

Changed into new shirts for the final push, Ian Cockburn (standing), his wife Clare, Dave Pettifer (Kenilworth) and Niklas Brännström from the most northerly Rotary Club in Europe, Luleå Nyckel in Sweden.

Niklas, Dave and Clare take a moment to relax.

Deputy Mayor of Kenilworth, Michael Coker, welcomes the walkers with the President of Kenilworth Rotary, Zig Layton-Henry.

Off again with ‘minder’, Rotarian Roy Shearing reporting progress to the command centre for the walk.

Back in their stride, for the last ten miles through Leek Wootton, Warwick and on to march down the Parade in Leamington at an estimated time of 3.00 pm Saturday.

The crowds wait at Leamington as the walkers do an extra lap round the park to make the walk 100 miles.

I wonder ...

Where are they?

The heroes arrive...

Striding down the parade on the last furlong.

Queen Victoria awaits the march past.

The finishing tape with Chairman of Warwick District, Dave Shilton there to welcome them home.

A well earned rest for all the walkers, including Steve McConnell, who rejoined the team at the end.

Presentations ... for Iain Cockburn from the Rotary Club of Southam 2000 whose idea it was. Having just had a hip replacement in his 50th year, he reckoned this was the way to test himself.

For Iain’s wife Clare, also of Southam 2000, who herself has just recovered from cancer.

Niklas Brännström from the most northerly Rotary Club in Europe, Luleå Nyckel in Sweden. Niklas is a Graduate Student in Mathematics at the University of Warwick and learned about the walk on a visit to Kenilworth Rotary.

Dave Pettifer, from Kenilworth Rotary, himself a one-time three-legged marathon runner (recorded in the Guiness Book of Records, 1992).

The biggest hero of them all, Steve McConnell, who confessed his only exercise before this was taking the dog out for a walk. He walked 57 miles before having to retire from exhaustion. Steve’s great contribution was to show that this exercise was no easy task and emphasized the achievement of his fellow walkers.

Further celebrations inside the Pump Room ...

... and a get-together from the Kenilworth Connection: Roy Shearing of Kenilworth Rotary, a member of the back-room team, the Chairman of the District Council, Dave Shilton, and his consort, with Dave Pettifer firmly in between.
