But what is missing? There are trees in the competition from the Lions, decorated with ducks, from Inner Wheel, from the Soroptomists, from the schools and various other organisations. The only Rotary Christmas Tree is in Talisman Square collecting donations for Myton Hospice. Don’t worry. Rotarians are not competing in the competition because they are fulfilling their role in supporting local activities as the highest level. The Rotary Club of Kenilworth is providing the prizes for the winners. See more pictures here.

Happy New Year!

The Rotary Club of Kenilworth opened its first meeting of 2010 with a talk by David Howe on the Spouses of Prime Ministers. An insightful and excellent talk of the minutiae of living in 10 Downing Street as a supernumary supporting the Prime Minister without any formal role. Insightful vignettes of the goings on in no. 10 over the centuries with great stories about Mary Wilson and Harold’s gin, Violet Attlee driving Clem to Buckingham Palace and parking round the corner and, of course, tales about Dennis Thatcher. An interesting evening.

Founder member Tom Roberts passed away on Friday 8th of January. He was a much-loved member of the club and we honour him affectionately in his fiftieth year as a Rotarian.

Susie Murray speaks to the club about her business ‘Purple Patch’ which specialises in raising funds for charities. The members listened intently, while some even took notes ...
The earthquake in Port au Prince, Haiti, on Tuesday 12th January, received immediate response through the donation of £980 for two Shelter Boxes organized by Zig Layton-Henry, chairman of club International Committee. This will add to the world-wide action of Rotary to send shelter boxes from an organisation of 1.2 million members.
The club is mindful of the freely given donations to Rotary Charities by the people of Kenilworth and its environs. We can all work together within a world-wide organization to make a difference.

See a video and obtain more information about Shelter Box in Haiti.

The Rotary Club of Kenilworth lost round three of the District Quiz to Southam 2000 by a margin of 30 points to 20. We were soundly beaten. In the first round we could not answer even one of the questions and lost every round except one. The fact that this one round involved questions on Rotary shows what useless geeks we are. Congratulations to Southam 2000.

Now there are around a thousand. But there are still four countries (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan) with several hundred million population where polio is an on-going problem.
